Kevinna spends lot of time in her sleeping room. She is a single mom who hardly go out in the neighborhood fearing the gunfire. Even though her apartment is situated in the less dangerous part of “Terrace”, last week shooting occurred just three houses away from her apartment.

View on the street in Mc Dougald underfunded housing complex. Children that play outside are one of the frequent innocent victims of gunfire. In Mc Dougals Terrace, there is no child that wouldn’t change their home for better environment. All children complain about shootings and how it limits their freedom to go around and how they are afraid of their moms being shot.

Javoante is the second youngest child of Kevinna. Since his father is in jail , he doesn't come only weekends, but stays by Kevinna during the whole weeks.

Children are making a cake in a memory of 35th birthday of Zamyara’s father Patrick, Kevinna’s ex-husband, who was shot 10 years ago in Durham in a gun provoked fight. Zamyara (11) was just 1 years old when this happened. After his death, Kevinna endured a mental breakdown for many years until her second relationship.

Shamiqua is a single mother of five who wishes to set up a non-profit organisation to help single mothers to earn extra income by starting-up little businesses. As a child Shamiqua have been moved back and forth between jail, cocaine addicted mother, and foster families. Now, she wishes to make it better for her children, but as a single mom without not much support of the father is hard to escape the housing situation.

Kevinna feels like a ‘fly on the wall’ in Mc Dougald Terrace. According to her, people are here unpredictable, and she doesn’t really trust anyone.

Tanya (7), Kavina’s youngest daughter has been grown up in housing projects where gun violence prevails. She the only child who lives with her mom permanently and at this moment not attending school as she is in the process of changing the school. She looks up to the sky from a window of sometimes claustrophobic apartment. Old 50’s houses were built as a racially segregated project for African American residents, and they stayed untouched without any reconstruction.

As a single mother Kevinna feels often lonely, living in a neighbourhood where she doesn’t feel safe to walk around, visit people, neither she has money to move out. Here, she is portrayed in a heart-breaking moment, after a phone call with her boyfriend whom she hardly sees. He told her that he has been seeing other girls.

Tanea( 7) Kevinna’s youngest daughter is a highly creative child. She is the only child who lives with her mom permanently and at this moment not attending school as she is in the process of changing the schools.

Kavina recovers from a difficult mental trauma after incidents from time ago. She lost her both siblings few years ago, her husband in the gun violence, her mother was diagnosed with dementia, and her oldest thirteen years old son refuses to visit her often.

Shamiqua feels often lonely despite her close neighbors. She says she became to drink disproportionally since they came to live in Mc Dougald Terrace.

Cassidy on his home terrace, two weeks after he was shot in his feet.Many people says he was lucky he got the "right bullet" that didn't destroyed his feet completely.

Cassidy and Arianne were hanging out together in the neighbourhood. Cassidy was shot in the chest while running away from the bullet on 4-11-2024. Two weeks before his death he told me he wants to do better and get back to normal school.He was attending Hillside school for troubled children in Durham.

Friends from the neighbourhood came to the place where Cassidy was shot to pay a tribute for his friend Cassidy who died two days ago just few houses away from his house.

I begin to get to know Maria, single mum of four children. She says she always stays inside the house. because outside is it a drama.
