Summer, 2020

Ross Gerhold | VA, United States

These images were captured during the height of the Richmond, Virginia protests in response to the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police during the summer of 2020. These photos were taken intentionally in the layer of activity directly outside of the protests themselves. The streets during that summer were particularly filled with movement and emotion, especially during the day. The primary focus became portraiture captured with consent and documentation of the world surrounding these events. Much of the imagry was captured in Richmond itself, some in central Virginia, and one in Washington, DC.

Ross Gerhold’s photography explores anxiety, disassociation, and the seemingly staged environments of our world. Gerhold examines today’s societal decay in tandem with the terrestrial beauty of the American South, but truly wherever he catches glimpses of personal and emotionally nostalgic scenes in the everyday world.
