Fairgoers

John Tynes | United States

In small-town America, the annual County Fair is often the biggest community event of the year. I spent several years in the late 2000s documenting one of these events in a northern coastal California near the Oregon border.  In 2009, I set up a temporary portrait studio on the grounds and offered fairgoers a chance to pose in whatever manner they felt appropriate at the moment. The combination of candid fairground moments and posed portraits creates a chronicle of an American small-town at their most relaxed and vulnerable, confidently portraying their individuality and sense of community.

Thanks to the Del Norte County Fair in Crescent City, California for their support.
